Emergency Medical Technician

The Emergency Medical Technician courses are designed to teach individuals the basics of the Emergency Medical Services profession. Once accepted, the student will learn; the foundations of being an EMT, anatomy and physiology, roles/responsibilities, medical and trauma responses, patient assessments, airway management, proper lifting techniques, documentation, communication and post transport debrief. In addition, the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician course provides an individual with limited advanced skills allowing them to expand their scope of practice while caring for patients in the pre-hospital setting.

Emergency Medical Technician – Basic

This course meets the Washington State Department of Health requirements for EMT certification. Course duration is approximately 3 months. Graduates of this program will be eligible to take the National Registry EMT certification examination.

Advanced Emergency Medical Technician

This course meets the Washington State Department of Health requirements for EMT certification. Course duration is approximately 4 months. Graduates of this program will be eligible to take the National Registry EMT certification examination.

Entrance/Admission Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED
  • Criminal History / Background Check (completed by Columbia Safety after registration fee is paid.)*
  • Documentation of Immunizations Records**
  • Copy of Federal or State Issued Identification.
  • Current AHA BLS CPR Certification (contact us if you need this course.)
  • Completed EMT Application Packet
  • $100 Application Fee
    AEMT Applicants ONLY:
    • Verification letter from current/past employer(s) proving at least one year of Washington State EMT-B practice. 
    • Letter of Recommendation from current employer.
    • Negative Drug Screen (scheduled by Columbia Safety)

*Criminal history records when considering individual for admission and continuation. These reviews are carried out because they relate to the essential qualifications of potential and continuing students under the Emergency Medical Technician Program curriculum standards, as well as to the safety and security of patients and public.

**Must have all immunization records within 10 days of the first day of class. 
Required immunizations;
~MMR – 2 required or titer,
~Vericella – proof of vaccination/chicken pox or titer
~Tdap – 1 required
~Hepatitis B – proof of series being started
~TB – required yearly
~Flu Shot – required yearly (during flu season)

***Items are non-refundable. These items are not a part of the “tuition” per the Washington State Private Vocational school refund policy. 

Post Class:
Upon successful completion the student will be authorized to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician exam (NREMT). After successful completion of the NREMT exam the individual will be awarded a Nationally recognized EMT or AEMT certification. The individual will then be able to apply for their Washington State EMT or AEMT certification. (NOTE: Washington state requires a state certification to practice. In order to obtain this certification an individual must have an agency affiliation. Columbia safety does not actively place students with an agency, but can recommend agencies a student may apply to. Successful completion of the Columbia Safety EMT program does not grant WA state licensure).
